REIGNING Port Adelaide best and fairest Chad Wingard will miss Saturday's clash against the Brisbane Lions with an ankle injury.

Wingard was hurt in last Sunday's loss to North Melbourne, but despite him arriving in Adelaide that night on crutches, captain Travis Boak said the club was hopeful he would recover before the weekend.

But assistant coach Josh Carr said on Wednesday that the club's "no-risk" policy on injured players meant Wingard would watch on from the sidelines.

"We'll go into the game with a no-risk policy this year and if it doesn't look like he's going to get up, which it doesn't at this stage, he won't play," Carr said.

The news was much better for fellow star forward Angus Monfries, who was tipped to return to the side in as few as three weeks from a torn hamstring.

Monfries tore his right hamstring while chasing a loose ball against North Melbourne last Sunday.

The 27-year-old grabbed high on his right leg and fell to the ground before being assisted from the field.

After the game Monfries told assistant coach Josh Carr the injury felt similar to the tear he suffered during last year's pre-season Showdown against Adelaide.

Monfries recovered from that injury in time to face Melbourne in round one.

Carr said the small forward/midfielder would be sidelined for three to four weeks.

"It definitely pulled up [well], I spoke to him the next day and he compared it to what he did early last year," Carr said.

"That was real positive - you saw the way he went down you would have thought that it could have been a lot worse than what it was.

"We get a lot of confidence out of that."

Monfries has been in outstanding form this season, averaging 18 possessions, seven marks, three tackles and nearly a goal a game.
