PORT Adelaide defender Tom Jonas has re-signed with the club for a further two seasons, tying himself to the Power until at least the end of 2016.

Jonas has cemented his place in the Power's fast-improving side last season, and was elevated into the club's leadership group this year.

The 23-year-old's tackling ferocity and attack on the ball as well as his versatility as a defender have made him a valuable member of coach Ken Hinkley's squad, which sits atop the AFL ladder after round six with a 5-1 record.

“He’s now announcing himself as a really strong defender, he can play tall, he can play small,” Hinkley said.

“He’s an important part of our backline and an important part of our whole football club, so it’s really exciting to have him signed on.

“Tom does everything he can to make himself the best player he can be and the best person he can be.

"He’s the example you want to look for, when you’re looking for people who want to get the most out of themselves."

The former rookie has managed 40 games since debuting in 2011.

Jonas said he was thrilled to secure his immediate future with the Power, ensuring he would play a role in whatever success the club might have over the next two years.

"To come off the rookie list and earn a place as a senior player is a rare opportunity and I understand that, so I've always wanted to repay that faith shown in me by the club,” Jonas said.

"It's always been about working hard, playing a selfless role for the team and consistently improving, and that's the way I've always tried to approach my footy.

"It's a great place to be, and playing at Adelaide Oval has been really special. It's going to be exciting to be part of that in the years to come."
