THE CONTROVERSIAL AFL variable pricing system is being investigated by the consumer watchdog, after an official complaint from fans.

The AFL confirmed on Thursday night it had been approached by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).

“The AFL recently met with the ACCC to address queries over the new pricing strategy,” a League spokesman said.

“We welcome the chance to clarify how the pricing system operates. We also re-emphasise the ticketing revenue is returned to the competing clubs.”

The round five Easter Monday clash involving Geelong and Hawthorn is the match of particular concern.

In the lead-up to the match club members had been forced to pay a fee on top of their membership. However, in the hours before the match, the League allowed some spectators in at reduced costs.

It is understood the AFL responded to the 'please explain' within the legal timeframe.

Both parties are now awaiting judgement.

Earlier this year the AFL revealed it would introduce variable ticket pricing for matches at the MCG, Etihad Stadium and Metricon Stadium based on demand for seats.
