GOLD Coast has extended the contract of in-form defender Steven May by three years.

May, arguably one of the Suns' best this season, has signed until the end of 2017.

He joins original draftees David Swallow, Sam Day and Brandon Matera among those who have recommitted to the club this year.

From Darwin, May was recruited to Gold Coast as a local talent access selection (Northern Territory) in 2010.

At 192cm and 100kg, May can play at both ends of the ground, but made full-back his home in 2014.

With Rory Thompson missing games through injury, and forced to help out both forward and in the ruck, May has taken on the extra responsibilities in stunning fashion.

He has lowered the colours of Matthew Pavlich, Drew Petrie and Jonathan Brown among others.

"I'm really excited in the direction the club is heading," he told goldcoastfc.com.au.

"We are starting to play consistent football. We know we still have plenty of improvement to offer and hopefully we'll be able to taste team success in the near future.

Gold Coast list manager Scott Clayton said the Suns were rapt to re-sign May.

"Steven is a quality young man, who is building a great reputation as an emerging leader internally at the Gold Coast Football Club," he said.
