TWO OF the country's oldest football clubs, Williamstown and West Perth, will do battle for the $100,000 first prize for the 2014 Foxtel Cup at Simonds Stadium on Tuesday night.

The runners-up will take home a cheque for $40,000.

THE CLUBS
The Williamstown Football Club, nicknamed the Seagulls, was founded in 1864. The Seagulls field a stand-alone senior team in the VFL. Williamstown won its last flag in 2003, its 13th premiership at VFA/VFL level.

The Falcons won last year's WAFL flag, bringing the club's tally to 19.

AFL CONNECTION
Western Bulldogs tagger Liam Picken was named Williamstown's best and fairest player in 2008 before joining the Bulldogs' rookie list. Collingwood premiership captain Nick Maxwell featured in the Seagulls' 2003 premiership team alongside Dane Swan when the Pies were affiliated with Williamstown. Sydney defender Dane Rampe, Collingwood defender Jack Frost and AFL Hall of Fame inductee Brad Johnson were also associated with the Seagulls.

West Perth has had several names drafted into the AFL system. Fremantle's Stephen Hill and his younger brother, Hawthorn's Bradley Hill, were recruited from the Falcons, while West Coast's Mark LeCras and Jack Darling were also involved with the WA side. Former North Melbourne coach Dean Laidley and Essendon and Sydney Swans star Derek Kickett began their senior careers at West Perth.

In its round-one match against Brisbane-based NEAFL side Aspley, Williamstown booted nine goals to three in the second half for a resounding 45-point win. The Seagulls advanced to the Grand Final after surging away from East Perth in round two, kicking three goals to one in the last quarter to record a 24-point victory.

West Perth 15.7 (97) d Western Storm 3.5 (23), Patersons Stadium

In the battle of last year's WAFL and VFL premiers, West Perth withstood a determined second-half comeback by Box Hill to clinch a two-point thriller and advance to the semi-finals. The Falcons booked a Grand Final berth after outclassing Tasmanian State League newcomer Western Storm by 74 points.

STATE LEAGUE FORM
Williamstown is again proving to be a genuine top-four contender this year, having made the VFL finals series for the last eight seasons. The Seagulls sit in fourth position on the ladder with a 9-4 win-loss ratio after 15 rounds.

It has been a disappointing year for West Perth in the WAFL competition. After round 16, the reigning premier finds itself in fifth place on the ladder. The Falcons sit three wins outside the top four with a 6-8 win-loss record, which effectively puts an end to their premiership defence and finals aspirations.

STAR PLAYER
Williamstown recruit Adam Marcon, who joined the Seagulls this season after three years with VFL side Northern Blues, has been a solid contributor all year. Marcon gathered 16 possessions, laid 10 tackles and kicked three second-half goals against Aspley in round one Foxtel Cup action, before amassing 19 touches against East Perth in the semi-finals.

On-baller Shane Nelson is one to watch for West Perth. Nelson has been a prolific ball winner for the Falcons in the WAFL this year, ranked first in the League for disposals with an average of 29.9. The 21-year-old gathered a team-high 23 possessions through the midfield against Box Hill Hawks in round one of the Foxtel Cup, and was rested in the semi-finals against Western Storm.

THE COACHES
Williamstown coach Andrew Collins led SANFL club West Adelaide to last year's Foxtel Cup title. Collins, a three-time Hawthorn premiership player and club best and fairest, spent six years with West Adelaide before returning to Victoria to take the reins as senior coach of the Seagulls.

West Perth coach Bill Monaghan led the Falcons to last year's WAFL flag. He played 204 senior games for Subiaco Lions and Peel Thunder, coached the Lions' reserves team to premierships in 2003 and 2005, and was appointed senior coach of the Falcons in 2009.
