THE AFL has explained the mistake that was made during Gillon McLachlan's farewell speech to departing Gold Coast player Karmichael Hunt.

The League released a statement on Thursday evening, which read: "AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan today formally thanked departing Gold Coast Suns player Karmichael Hunt, on behalf of the wider competition, for his four-year contribution to the game.

"As part of Mr McLachlan’s pre-recorded message, the AFL’s production team erred by also including an initial take Mr McLachlan had recorded and chosen to discard.

"General manager of AFL Media, Peter Campbell, said he wished to formally apologise to Karmichael Hunt, the Gold Coast Suns and Mr McLachlan for any embarrassment caused with this inadvertent production error."
