LUKE McPharlin has confirmed he will be play on in 2015 after Fremantle announced the veteran defender had signed a one-year deal.

The 32-year-old missed the club’s finals campaign after injuring his calf against Geelong in round 20.

Given he managed just 13 games this year after just 16 the season before, there was speculation the 2012 All Australian defender may not play on.

But after weeks of discussions with the Fremantle hierarchy, McPharlin has signed a one-year contract that will give him the opportunity to reach the 250-game milestone next season.

He has played 238 AFL matches, including 12 with Hawthorn at the start of his career, and will turn 33 in December.

Fremantle's list manager Brad Lloyd told the club website the Dockers had the upmost confidence that McPharlin's body would hold up next season.

"He’s a tremendous athlete and a complete professional, so we're confident he will play at the high level we’ve come to expect from him," Lloyd said.

Fremantle coach Ross Lyon said in September he had already held discussions with McPharlin about the prospect of managing his workload next season, including limiting his travel load.

McPharlin missed the 2012 finals series with a hamstring injury after playing 21 home and away matches in his All Australian year.

He missed eight weeks in the lead-up to the 2013 finals series with a torn calf but played in all three finals.

But he missed the Dockers final five matches this year due to another calf problem after missing matches earlier in the season with quad and knee issues.
