MARK Thompson will not be at Essendon next year after talks on a new role for the 2014 coach broke down on Wednesday.

Thompson met with Essendon chairman Paul Little and chief Xavier Campbell on Wednesday morning to discuss his future at the club.

After that meeting, the two-time premiership coach told the Herald Sun his latest stint at the Bombers was over.

"I'm out, I'm done," Thompson said.

"There's not a job there for me.

"I was happy to work there, but a role could not be agreed upon.

"In the end, it just didn't work at all."

Campbell later confirmed Thompson would not be part of Essendon's coaching staff next season.

"There were many factors that were considered in our decision but ultimately at the end of the day any role (for Thompson) needed to have purpose and add meaningful value to our football club," Campbell said.

"This was an extremely difficult decision for the Essendon Football Club but one which we believe was made in the best interest of both parties.

"We held extensive negotiations but we were not able to reach a position that would satisfy both parties and in the end we had to make a difficult decision in the interest of all parties moving forward.

"I would like to commend Mark on the job he did coaching the team in the absence of James this year. He played a pivotal role in the ongoing development and improvement of our players."

Thompson took over as Essendon coach ahead of this season as James Hird served a 12-month suspension over Essendon's 2012 supplements program.

Thompson's future has been clouded since the Bombers bowed out of this year's finals series in the first week.

Thompson's position has been further clouded by the uncertainty that has surrounded Hird's future at Essendon.

There were reports Hird was set to be sacked when he decided to launch a Federal Court appeal against the club's wishes, but the club great remains coach.

Thompson re-joined Essendon at the end of 2011 to mentor then newly appointed coach Hird, having resigned as Geelong coach after 11 seasons and two premierships despite being contracted.

The former Bombers captain played 202 games from 1983-1996 before embarking on his coaching career as an assistant at Essendon and then North Melbourne.

Thompson is yet to pay a $30,000 fine the AFL imposed on him as part of its sanctions for Essendon's 2012 supplements program.
