Draft wrap: Saint Paddy's day and the Cats go for the X-factor

SYDNEY Swans father-son prospect Josh Dunkley will spend this week training with the club, which is already set for a bumper 2015 draft crop after snaring Isaac Heeney last week.

Dunkley, the son of 217-game Swans defender, Andrew, will be joined by Callum Mills, who has already been touted as one of the top midfielders in next year's draft class.

With Mills a member of the club's zone academy, the Swans will get first access to both players, although mechanisms of the father-son and academy bidding system appear likely to change by the time of the next draft.

Mills and Dunkley will spend this week at the Swans as part of the NAB AFL Academy program. The national program has 35 members in a 'level two' squad who will be heading to a club for a week to assimilate with the elite level.

It has proved a valuable experience for clubs and players in the past, so much so that it will be the first of two separate club visits for each player at different clubs in the restructured academy program.

The academy will gather for a camp in Melbourne at the end of this week following their club placements. In January, the squad will head to Tampa and Orlando in Florida for a 10-day, high-performance camp in what will be the academy's first visit to America.

Queenslander Eric Hipwood, who is a member of the Brisbane Lions' academy, recently filled the final spot in the national academy squad. The tall forward will join impressive midfielder Ben Keays in training with the Lions this week.

While the players get a better sense of an AFL environment, club recruiters have also found the training stints useful in the past to measure a player's capabilities.

No.3 pick Angus Brayshaw completed his placement at Melbourne earlier this year and joined the Dees at last week's draft, and the previous year Ben Lennon starred during his week at Richmond before they chose him later that season.
