JACK Watts is still yet to resume full training, despite Melbourne expecting him to re-join the main group immediately after the Christmas break.

Groin pain forced the 23-year-old to undertake a revised training program in December with Melbourne football manager Josh Mahoney telling AFL.com.au Watts would be ready for full training post-Christmas.

But as the players returned to the club on Monday for their first training session of 2015, Watts trained away from the main group with six other teammates, including draftees Alex Neal Bullen and Billy Stretch.

The 2008 No.1 draft pick took part in a series of running drills and light skills.

He appeared to move pain free during his modified training session at Gosch's Paddock, and looks as though he is progressing well.

Recruit Heritier Lumumba has continued to impress on the track.

After 10 years at Collingwood, Lumumba requested a trade to Melbourne after last season, and since his arrival the former Magpie has become one of the club's strongest trainers.

The 28-year-old, along with several of his new teammates, appears to be thriving on the Demons' high fat, low carbohydrate diet, sporting a leaner physique at training on Monday.

Forward Chris Dawes also looks as though he has shed some kilograms over the summer, along with ruckman Mark Jamar.

It was a tough first session back after the break with players sweating it out on Gosch's Paddock for nearly 180 minutes.

The main group took part in a range of skills training before engaging in some non-contact match simulation.

In between the drills, players were forced to pump out push-ups, sit-ups and sprints with Lumumba, Jack Grimes and the club's No.2 draft pick Christian Petracca solid performers.

Captain Nathan Jones was the only notable absentee from the training session, along with midfielder Jack Trengove who is still recovering from a navicular injury.
