MELBOURNE high-flyer Jeremy Howe still hasn't requested a new contract offer from the Demons, as speculation mounts he could be poached by a rival club.

Howe was reportedly targeted by Greater Western Sydney during last year's NAB AFL Trade Period, and the out-of-contract swingman remains hot property ahead of his 100th game against the Giants this Sunday.

While Melbourne is set to ramp up its list management discussions after this weekend's final round, the club is still unclear about Howe's plans for next season.

"To my knowledge they (Howe and his manager Ben Niall) really haven't asked for an offer yet, so again I don't get too heavily involved in that," coach Paul Roos said.

"I think Jeremy needs to finish off the season really well and then, probably like a lot of players now they wait, they weigh up other options, they see what else is available and then they come back to the club.

"So exactly where it's at, I'm not 100 per cent certain. But Jeremy and his management have been really keen to wait … and source out other opportunities.

"That's just the way the footy world works now."

Trade whispers: Leuenberger, Smith in Giants' sights

After putting off contract negotiations earlier this season, Howe re-opened talks with the Demons last month amid a solid patch of form as a rebounding defender.

The 25-year-old has played every game this season and is averaging 14 disposals, five marks and he's booted nine goals.

Howe is not a free agent and would require Melbourne to orchestrate a trade if he decides to leave.

In positive news for the Dees, restricted free agent Colin Garland appears set to put pen to paper on a new deal soon.

The 191cm defender has enjoyed a strong campaign, playing all but two matches after breaking his hand in the Queen's Birthday clash with Collingwood.

"I think that's progressing pretty quickly," Roos said of the contract talks. "My understanding on that is that there's an offer on the table.

"It's not far off as far as I know, but again I haven't delved too much into that, so we're hopeful Col will be fine."

Garland has played 134 games for the Dees since he was recruited with pick 46 overall in the 2006 draft and finished runner-up in the club's best and fairest two years ago.
