IT'S official - the 2015 Toyota AFL Grand Final was the hottest on record.

The temperature reached 31.3 degrees at 3.28pm as the Hawks and Eagles sweated it out during the second quarter at the MCG.

The previous record high temperature on Grand Final day was 30.7 degrees in the 1987 decider between Carlton and Hawthorn, which the Blues won by 33 points.

Speaking at the North Melbourne Grand Final breakfast on Saturday morning, Hawks champion Dermott Brereton recounted the 1987 decider and said the heat played a big role in his team's demise.

Hawthorn burned some matches early on Saturday afternoon in pursuit of a three-peat, using 38 interchanges of a maximum 120 in the first quarter.

The Eagles, hunting a fourth flag overall and first since 2006, made 25 first-term changes.
