LUCKLESS Sydney Swans defender Alex Johnson is about to have his fourth – and what he hopes is his last – knee reconstruction.

But it's good news for the 2012 premiership player, who is now a step closer to returning to the field.

After an infection ruined his last reconstruction, scans during the week showed he was all clear to try again.

Earlier this month the Swans showed faith in the 23-year-old by re-signing him to a one-year deal.

Swans football manager Tom Harley told The Age that the club was still deciding on what form of reconstruction Johnson would undergo.

"We will discuss that with the surgeon and Alex will have his own views on that," Harley said.

Johnson has not played a premiership game since the 2012 Grand Final triumph over Hawthorn.

He first ruptured his ACL in the following pre-season against Gold Coast.

"I'm really excited about the surgery," Johnson said.

"I'm just excited at the prospect of getting it done so I can look forward to that comeback game."
