WEST Coast's games record holder Dean Cox has been appointed as the Eagles' new stoppage coach for 2016.

Cox will take over the role vacated by Don Pyke after Pyke was appointed as the new head coach of Adelaide in October.

Cox retired at the end of the 2014 season but stepped straight into coaching. He was Eagles ruck coach in 2015, having filled the same role while playing in 2014.

He will remain as the ruck coach in 2016 working with Nic Naitanui, Scott Lycett, Fraser McInnes and new recruit Jonathan Giles, but will also oversee the stoppage set-ups with midfield coach Brady Rawlings.

Eagles football manager Craig Vozzo told the club's website that Cox was the right choice to step into the vacant role.

"Dean impressed with his work ethic and capacity to pass on his extensive knowledge and experience during the 2015 season," Vozzo said.

"So it seems like a natural progression for him to also take on the stoppage coaching responsibilities.

"Obviously the ruckmen are intrinsically involved in a lot of the set-ups around stoppages and Dean worked closely with Don and midfield coach Brady Rawlings this year.

"Brady and Dean work well together and in conjunction with senior coach Adam Simpson look forward to continuing the education of our developing list around the game plan and other skill acquisitions."

The Eagles' first-to-fourth-year players start pre-season on Monday November 23, with the remainder of the squad starting on December 1.
