Leon Cameron on Cam McCarthy

TWO WEEKS after he went on indefinite leave, there's still no word on Greater Western Sydney forward Cam McCarthy's future.

McCarthy, 20, is homesick and the club is yet to receive any indication whether he's going to return from his home state of Western Australia.

"It's been an awkward situation," coach Leon Cameron conceded on Melbourne radio station SEN on Friday morning.

"No one wants to see Cam lose that passion to play AFL footy.

"The best thing for Cam is to be with his family.

"He's a terrific young kid. We just want him to feel good about himself, (to) feel good about being a professional athlete again.

"Where that takes him no one knows, but the best choice for Cam and also the footy club is just to give him a little bit of breathing space."

McCarthy requested a trade to Fremantle during the off-season, but the Giants refused.

He kicked 35 goals last season, after signing a three-year deal in 2014.

Cameron said homesickness was a reality the football club had to face.

"(The) majority of young players we've had at this footy club have gone through some form of homesickness."
