BRISBANE Lions defender Pearce Hanley met with Gold Coast on Tuesday as he edges closer to deciding his football future.

Hanley is contracted with the Lions until the end of 2019 but the club and player are open to a trade this year if a mutually beneficial deal can be done.

AFL.com.au understands Hanley toured Gold Coast's impressive new facilities at Metricon Stadium on Tuesday, with the Suns looming as his likely new home.

The Lions are believed to want a top-10 draft pick for the Irishman, who, barring an injury-plagued 2015, has finished in the top four of the club's best and fairest award every year from 2012.

The Suns are well placed to satisfy the Lions' demands given they hold picks No.4 and No.8 in this year's draft, with the latter pick most likely to be involved in a deal for Hanley.

The Suns appeal to Hanley as he would prefer to remain in south-east Queensland to be near his younger brother Cian, who is on the Lions' rookie list.

Port Adelaide vice-captain Hamish Hartlett is another player mulling over his football future, with a move to a Melbourne-based club becoming increasingly likely.

Hartlett, who is contracted with the Power until 2021, flew into Melbourne on Tuesday, and met with several clubs to get a feel for his options.

Hartlett is due to leave Australia on holidays at the end of this week and will be away for the entire trade period, so Tuesday's meetings were designed to give him and his suitors enough information to make informed decisions.

Essendon is understood to be one of the clubs pursuing Hartlett, but North Melbourne is believed to have cooled on the midfielder after dangling a lucrative long-term offer in front of him ahead of last year's trade period.

Port expects to be notified of Hartlett's preferred new club before the NAB AFL Trade Period starts on Monday.

Former North Melbourne spearhead Drew Petrie flew into Perth on Tuesday as he explores extending his career with West Coast.

Petrie, who turns 34 this month, wants to play on but the Eagles won't be in a position to offer him a list spot until they have ruled out other tall targets.

Although key forwards Jesse Hogan and Rory Lobb extended contracts with Melbourne and Greater Western Sydney on Tuesday, Fremantle looks set to add the Giants' Cam McCarthy to its list early in the trade period.

The talented 21-year-old kicked 35 goals in 2015 before returning to Western Australia early this year with homesickness.

AFL.com.au understands negotiations between the Dockers and the Giants could result in the clubs swapping late draft picks to bolster the Giants' points tally as they prepare to bid on academy graduates.

Fremantle's second selection this year comes at pick No.39.

The Giants will also negotiate in good faith with Carlton, which hopes to secure young defender Caleb Marchbank.

The Blues are reluctant to offload pick No.5 but the Giants remain hopeful the prized pick will be included in the deal, with pick No.15 or No.16 potentially heading back to Carlton.

The Tigers continue to be linked to Collingwood's Marley Williams but AFL.com.au understands the out-of-contract defender is not a high priority for Richmond.

The Tigers' negotiations with Gold Coast for midfielder Dion Prestia have not gained any momentum, with each club understood to be waiting to see how the other values the 23-year-old.

Matt de Boer, Tendai Mzungu and Clancee Pearce were among six players delisted by Fremantle on Tuesday.

All three ex-Dockers have attracted rival interest but any firm offers are unlikely to come until late in the trade period or in the subsequent delisted free agency periods.
