THE PROPOSED Billy Hartung-Brendan Whitecross trade to the Brisbane Lions has been abandoned.

It emerged late last week Hawthorn was working on a deal with the Lions that would have sent Hartung and Whitecross to the Gabba in exchange for one of the Lions' early second-round picks, most likely No.21.

Acquiring such a pick would have helped the Hawks in their attempts to broker a trade with Gold Coast for Jaeger O'Meara

The Hawks secured pick No.10 in a trade with St Kilda last Friday and packaging that with pick No.21 would have been – at the very least – a strong starting point in their negotiations with the Suns.

However, that trade scenario is off the table now after the Hawks' talks with the Lions on Hartung and Whitecross broke down.

The Lions' desire to receive something more than Hartung and Whitecross in exchange for pick No.21 meant the clubs had work to do to get the deal over the line.

And when Whitecross, who this year satisfied a trigger clause for 2017, decided he wanted to remain at Waverley, the proposed deal fell apart.

Collingwood could look to Fremantle defender Alex Silvagni to solve its sudden shortage of tall defenders after the departure of Nathan Brown to St Kilda and the likely trade of Jack Frost to the Brisbane Lions.

Silvagni, 29, has played 53 games with the Dockers since his debut in 2010, and made a strong finish to the season after overcoming a calf problem.

In the last five home and away rounds, he did good jobs on Lance Franklin, Jack Darling, Taylor Walker and Jeremy Cameron to show he was still a quality defender.

The Dockers will recruit Joel Hamling after he accepted an offer to join the club weeks after winning a flag with the Western Bulldogs, with a late second or early third-round pick most likely enough to clinch the deal.

Collingwood is considering a range of key defenders as potential trade targets, but Silvagni is out of contract so if he is not traded or re-contracted he could be picked up as a delisted free agent.

Melbourne met with Hawthorn to discuss the trade value of vice-captain Jordan Lewis, who officially requested a trade to the Demons on Monday

The Demons are confident of securing a trade for the Hawthorn vice-captain, who they have offered a three-year deal.

Negotiations are continuing but a swap of draft picks is likely, with the Demons holding picks No.48 and No.66 and the Hawks' first selection after pick No.23 is now pick No.57.

The deal was almost completed last week after Hawthorn raised the possibility of a trade, but it did a sudden about-turn and wanted to hold on to its four-time premiership player.

However, after considering his future over the weekend, Lewis, who is out of contract at the end of next season, remains keen to get to the Demons.

Xavier Richards and his manager, Phil Mullen, will be in Melbourne to talk with clubs after the Swans key-position player announced on Monday he wanted a trade

The out-of-contract Richards, 23, played a career-high 10 games this season, including all four of the Swans' finals, and is hopeful of finding a new home before Thursday's trade deadline.

Lions football manager David Noble said on Monday evening he was confident a trade sending Pearce Hanley to Gold Coast would be completed on Tuesday

In a complex third-party deal still being finalised:

-       Gold Coast would give up picks No.22 and No.30 and receive Hanley and a late pick.

-       The Lions would give up Hanley and pick No.19 and receive No.22 and a future first-round pick from Port Adelaide.

-       The Power would give up its 2017 first-round pick and receive pick No.19 and pick No.30.

As of Monday afternoon, Port Adelaide midfielder Brendon Ah Chee was unlikely to make his way to Gold Coast this year.

There was speculation Ah Chee could be involved in Port's proposed three-way trade with the Suns and Brisbane Lions, but the Power midfielder's management was yet to be informed of such a deal.

Ah Chee, who remains hopeful of playing alongside his brother Callum at the Suns, was told last week Gold Coast was unlikely to have a list spot for him.

The club has not made contact with his management since the opening week of trade period.

Rhys Palmer is the latest Greater Western Sydney player to be brought into the proposed Caleb Marchbank trade to Carlton after the Blues enquired about his availability.

At this stage a move to Ikon Park is only a possibility and it is understood the Giants don't expect to lose Palmer, who has also attracted interest from a second club.

A number of Giants are still waiting for the stalemate in Carlton's talks with Adelaide over Bryce Gibbs to be resolved

If the Blues are forced to trade their pick No.5 for Marchbank, then Jarrod Pickett, James Stewart and Palmer are all likely to be discussed as part of that deal.

However, if the Blues acquire Adelaide's pick No.13 as part of a trade for Gibbs, that pick would likely be sent to the Giants for Marchbank without other GWS players being involved.

St Kilda is likely to offer a late draft pick for out-of-contract Western Bulldogs midfielder Koby Stevens, who asked to be traded to the Saints last week.

The exact value of that pick is expected to be determined after the Bulldogs finalise other deals they have in motion.

Richmond's attempts to snare Geelong midfielder Josh Caddy did not progress on Monday and it appears increasingly likely the 24-year-old will remain at the Cattery.

The Tigers pushed to secure Caddy in a straight swap for midfielder Brett Deledio, who had hoped to join Geelong after 12 seasons at Punt Road.

But sources close to both players on Monday suggested that trade won't progress and both Caddy and Deledio will likely remain with their clubs in 2017.

Key defender Eric Mackenzie appears likely to serve out the final year of his contract with the Eagles despite rival interest, while out-of-contract small forward Jarryd Blair is expected to re-sign with Collingwood.
