Suns denied Ablett's shock trade request to Geelong

AFL 2016 Rd 06 - Geelong v Gold Coast

Imagine if Patrick Dangerfield and Gary Ablett were teammates?

GOLD Coast quickly dismissed a request from superstar midfielder Gary Ablett to return to Geelong.

Ablett has two years of his contract with the Suns remaining, but asked for a trade to the Cats before the start of the NAB AFL Trade Period.

Cats head of football Steve Hocking said the Suns didn't allow the proposal to go far.

"Gold Coast was very clear on the fact he was their player and will continue to be their player," Hocking told News Corp.

"He had just signed a three-year deal earlier in the year.

"They were very clear on that and shut it down very quickly to Gary.

"We respected their opinion right from the word go.

"It was him looking to come back to the club and it was all to do with him and the Gold Coast.

"It didn't drag on too long, it was shut down by the Gold Coast."

Suns general manager of football Marcus Ashcroft issued a statement on Wednesday night confirming Ablett's trade request.

"The club regularly has private conversations with players and their managers," he said.

"Our discussions with Gary were no different. But following recent media reports, Gary and the club have agreed it's in everyone's best interests to be as transparent as possible in regards to his end of year meeting.

"At the end of the season, and well before the exchange period, Gary asked a question relating to the possibility of him returning to Geelong. The club's response was an emphatic no. An answer Gary both accepted and understood.

"Gary is absolutely committed to the Gold Coast Suns. This is best exemplified by his active role in recruiting mature players to our club during the recent exchange period."

Ablett has been the marquee player at the Suns since the club's inception in 2011.

The 32-year-old has struggled with injury during the past two seasons, but is still the club's most recognisable player.

It has been reported Ablett wanted to return to Geelong for personal reasons.

Ablett is expected to relinquish the captaincy during the off-season, with key forward Tom Lynch and defender Steven May tipped to be co-captains next year.

The Suns were desperate to ensure another big name didn't leave the club after the loss of Jaeger O'Meara (Hawthorn) and Dion Prestia (Richmond).

Ablett signed a three-year contract extension with the Suns in 2015.
