STAR forward Michael Walters has committed to Fremantle's rebuild by re-signing with the Dockers until the end of 2020.

Walters' two-year contract extension comes a month after he was voted into the leadership group for the first time.

The 26-year-old shapes as one of Freo's most important players as Ross Lyon transitions the list towards youth after signalling a four-year rebuild last year.

Walters has won Freo's goalkicking in three of the past four seasons and has been one of the standout performers in the club's opening two JLT Community Series matches.

He booted three majors against Collingwood in the Dockers' after-the-siren win in Mandurah on Saturday, and was one of Fremantle's few shining lights in a rusty first-up loss to West Coast.

Last month, Walters said becoming "more of a man" helped turn his career around five years ago when he was at the crossroads after arriving at pre-season training overweight.

The lively goalkicker was sent back to Swan Districts but is now viewed as Fremantle's most dedicated player on the training track, and is among the AFL's most dangerous small forwards.

Walters has played 94 games and booted 177 goals since he was taken with pick 53 in the 2008 NAB AFL Draft.

"It’s really exciting news for the club," list manager Brad Lloyd said of Walters' re-signing.

"Michael came in as a fairly late draft pick in 2008, but he’s worked extremely hard at his football to become a really high level player in the AFL.

"He performs week in week out and he’s always around and impacting key moments.

"He’s a player that is really important to us on the field and as a leader at our football club."
