STEVEN May is not planning on leaving the Suns, but the Gold Coast co-captain says he is in no rush to put the finishing touches on a new contract.

May is the last prominent Suns player yet to ink a deal following the pre-season extensions of David Swallow and Jack Martin.

And although the 25-year-old stopped short of calling it a formality, he told AFL.com.au that Gold Coast had little reason to worry.

"I've never really signed at the beginning of the year," May said.

"I've always been a mid to late year (with my) new contract.

"I know being captain now there's a bit of expectation.

"I've got this new role as captain, I want to see how I go, and focus on my footy.

"I think the contract will look after itself."

Following last year's departures of Dion Prestia to Richmond and Jaeger O'Meara to Hawthorn, May said he understood the interest around his contract.

"I know with our club losing a few players, they wouldn't want to see me leaving, but I just haven't addressed it at this point in time," he said.

"I'm not going out looking for a new home or anything like that … I just don't feel I have a need to re-sign right at this moment."
