WEST Coast has confirmed the re-signing of top draftee Daniel Venables until the end of 2020.

AFL.com.au reported two weeks ago that Venables was close to extending his mandatory two-year draft contract, and the young Victorian has added another two years to his deal.

"I’m just stoked with the opportunity the club has given me; I’m really happy," Venables said.

"It’s pretty daunting, I guess, coming over from Melbourne, but I’ve embraced it and the club has embraced me.

"I’ve probably come at the perfect time to West Coast.

"We’re moving to the new stadium and to the new facilities at Lathlain Park, so I can’t really ask for anything more."

Although Venables is yet to debut, he looms as a key plank in West Coast's future.

The 18-year-old had an interrupted pre-season due to a stress problem in his foot but excited coach Adam Simpson with his raw potential and has drawn comparisons to star onballer Luke Shuey.

Venables is explosive around stoppages and has an aggressive streak, and would have made his debut against Geelong in round 13 before being struck down by turf toe.

The Western Jets product has been sidelined for the past six weeks and his season is in doubt with at least another three weeks before he is ready to resume.

Venables hasn't played since he booted two goals from 14 touches in East Perth's win over arch-rivals West Perth on June 5.

He has averaged 13 disposals and better than a goal per game for the Royals in eight matches.

Venables' re-signing comes hot on the heels of Dom Sheed and Jackson Nelson recommitting to the club until the end of 2019.

The Eagles are embarking on a transition period with their list and have given opportunities to young players, with Simpson insisting the club's aging list will have a different look within the next 12 months.

West Coast has an eye on restocking its midfield, with Kurt Mutimer, Liam Duggan and Sheed given responsibility in the engine room this season.

Ball magnet Luke Partington has been an emergency but is yet to debut, while Venables' brash confidence and willingness to take the game on thrilled onlookers at WAFL level before his toe injury.

"Daniel demonstrated resilience throughout his pre-season rehabilitation program and delivered on the field when his opportunity came," list manager Brady Rawlings said.

"He is still only 18 years-old and given Dan’s character and raw talent, we think he has a bright future at the club.

"We are excited to see where he takes his game in the years to come."
