WHO RULES footy's ministry of defence? Backmen are frequently overlooked when the game's great players as celebrated, so in the AFL.com.au Fan Awards we're inviting you to choose 2017's standout defender.

The nominees are ...

Phil Davis

The Giants co-captain is consistently given the job on his opposition's leading forward, but he has rarely given them an easy possession this year in a brilliant season. Davis is as strong as any defender in the contest and his leadership has been a key factor in his side's success.

Sam Docherty

Docherty has taken his game to new heights this year and been a shining light in what has been a difficult season for the Blues. He has played a crucial part in creating drive for the young side and provided a steady head in defence, which could earn him his first All Australian nod.

Michael Hurley

Hurley's return to Essendon after a doping suspension has been seamless. The key defender has had multiple cases of leather poisoning this season and is arguably the Bombers' most crucial asset. His ability to intercept opposition attacks and turn them into his own has been a clear highlight in 2017.

Alex Rance

The full-back has done nothing to dent his remarkable reputation as one of the leading defenders of his generation. Rance has done a number on several leading forwards this year and rarely gets beaten in one-on-one contests, while also damaging his opponents with classy ball movement.

Rory Laird

Coming off two All Australian squad selections in a row, expectations were always going to be high for Laird this season, and he hasn't disappointed. The half-back star has lost none of his ball-winning ability and continues to launch venomous attacks from Adelaide's defence with ease.

Michael Hibberd

Enduring a year away from the game due to suspension failed to slow down this hard-running half-back. In his first year for Melbourne, Hibberd has been as consistent as anyone at the Demons, providing endless run and carry for his side and quashing opponents' influence throughout the year.
