JACKSON Merrett, Jake Long and Shaun McKernan have re-signed with Essendon for next season.

Merrett, the older brother of star midfielder Zach, did not play a senior game last season and had been linked to a move to Port Adelaide.

However, he has retained his spot on the senior list and will be hoping to build on the 54 games he has played for the club in six seasons.

"I am very pleased to sign on with Essendon again for the upcoming season," Merrett told the club website.

"Last year was a frustrating season, not playing many games due to injury.

"I'm looking forward to getting stuck into pre-season and giving myself the best opportunity for senior football. I'm excited with the list Essendon has and I’m confident it is heading in the right direction."

Long, the son of Essendon legend Michael, has been upgraded to the senior list.

He played three games at the end of 2016 but couldn't manage a senior appearance in 2017.

The Bombers will retain McKernan as a rookie for another season, but under revised rules next season, category A rookies will be able to play senior games without needing to be on the senior list.

Essendon youngster Alex Morgan was cut by the club this week to join North Melbourne as a delisted free agent
