FREMANTLE has confirmed James Hird is under consideration for a part-time job at the club.

The former Essendon coach, whose tenure ultimately ended in the wake of the supplements scandal, has not been appointed to any position as yet.

SEN reported on Friday that Dockers coach Ross Lyon had reached out to Hird about a role within the club's football department, and Fremantle confirmed later in the day that the Brownlow Medallist was under consideration.

“The club is going through a process to potentially appoint a part-time opposition analyst based in Melbourne,” general manager of football operations Chris Bond said.

“We are in the early stages of considering a number of possible candidates and that process has not yet been completed.”

The AFL confirmed Fremantle had contacted the League to check hiring that Hird would be okay.

A League spokesman said Fremantle was told there was "no impediment because Hird had already returned to the game", and in fact coached at Essendon after his suspension.

Hird presented last year's Norm Smith Medal to Richmond's Dustin Martin on Grand Final day.

Freo captain Nat Fyfe idolised Hird growing up and had not heard any talk of the former Bombers champion joining the Dockers when he spoke to media on Friday afternoon.

"Is that right? That would be great," Fyfe said.

"This is literally the first I'm hearing of it. He's an idol of mine and that would be unreal, but I can't really comment because you're breaking the news to me now."

"Why I loved James Hird as a player? Because he was a gun, he impacted at big moments, but me commenting on him potentially being a coach wouldn't be appropriate at this time."

has contacted Hird for comment. It is believed he’s currently overseas.
