MARTIN Gleeson has signed a new two-year contract with Essendon, underlining his value despite missing all of this season so far through injury.

The 23-year-old has become a regular member of Essendon's backline, playing 60 games in the previous three seasons.

His new deal ties him to the Bombers until at least the end of 2020.

Gleeson looked set for a breakout year this season before a serious foot injury in the JLT Community Series against Geelong ruined his campaign.

The intercepting backman, who also offers rebound out of defence, injured his foot landing after a marking contest.

He required surgery on the break and dislocation and remains on the sidelines, but the club is hopeful he can return in the second half of the season.

"Marty's form last year and during the pre-season was outstanding," coach John Worsfold said.

"He has grown into a great young clubman. Marty has inspired many with his attitude towards rehabilitation and is doing everything he can to return to the field.

"He has become an important asset to our backline and we are excited to see what he can achieve at Essendon over the next few years."
