INSPIRATIONAL Western Bulldogs defender Dale Morris is set to make a stunning return from a partially torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee this weekend.

Likely to come in via the VFL, the 36-year-old is set to line up in his first match since the final round of last season.

Initially injured in March, in an incident that looked career-ending, Morris just needs to make it through this week to get back on the field, according to Dogs medical services manager Chris Bell.

"Provided he gets through training this week like we expect, he will make his long-anticipated comeback this weekend, which is extremely exciting for everyone else at the club," Bell told westernbulldogs.com.au.

Footscray faces Port Melbourne at Adcon Stadium at 2pm on Saturday – 106 days after Morris injured his knee.

Morris has lined up in 252 career AFL games.

The experienced backman accomplished a similar feat last year, hurting his other knee during the pre-season but making it back to the elite level by round 11.

Meanwhile, young forward Fergus Greene will miss the season as prepares for shoulder surgery for a dislocation suffered before the bye.

"Fergus has been in a conservative management model, but unfortunately, we have been unable to improve Fergus' shoulder to a level that will allow him to withstand the demands of AFL footy," Bell said.

"Fergus will need a shoulder operation which will end his 2019 campaign, but he'll be ready to attack next pre-season."
