A VISIBLY annoyed Matthew Knights will seek clarification on three issues from umpires boss Jeff Gieschen following Essendon's 19-point loss to Melbourne on Sunday.

Knights questioned his team's attitude and attack on the ball during the game, saying the Bombers "lost their way" after the first five minutes of the match.

However, it was the seven goals Melbourne kicked as a result of 50m penalties that the Essendon coach was most concerned about and despite blaming his players for "gift-wrapping" the game through ill-discipline, he left no doubt that he would follow up the issue with the umpiring department.

"Melbourne's first goal was a decision and then a 50m penalty; the first of a string of, I think, seven 50m-penalty goals to the Melbourne footy club over the four quarters", he said.

"You just can't gift-wrap goals like that. I think you're not going to win footy games if you gift wrap seven 50m penalties that result in goals."

Knights highlighted two other areas he would seek answers to, including a holding the ball decision paid against Sam Lonergan that Knights said was similar to tackles he saw in Saturday's Geelong-Hawthorn clash that went without penalty.

"Sam Lonergan wasn't tackled - he got his handball free, so I'll have a look into that one," he said.

He also indicated he would follow up a free kick paid against Travis Colyer when he chased down and tackled Demon youngster Jack Watts.

Knights admitted to glancing in the umpires' direction during the three-quarter time break, but denied he was staring at them. He also said he had no verbal interaction with the umpires during the game.

Despite his issues with the umpiring, Knights said the game was lost through poor ball use, particularly in front of goal. The Bombers had more inside 50s than Melbourne and six more scoring shots but were unable to translate those statistics onto the scoreboard.
