THE AFL'S first free agent, Brent Moloney, says at least five clubs are interested in securing him for next season.

Moloney, who in announcing he was leaving the Demons effectively became the AFL's first free agent, said he was looking forward to a fresh start at a new club, one where he would hopefully play finals football.

"Look, we've had a fair bit of interest," Moloney said on Channel Nine's Footy Show.

"Five or six clubs have contacted (my manager) Bruce (Kaider) and I think I've got three or four years to offer.

"My body is sound and feels really good. My mind is good and I'm just looking forward to the opportunity of a new club and a fresh start."

Moloney said he couldn't see himself being a part of Melbourne's next premiership side.

"Obviously, I'm a proud person and very passionate, so it did hurt (not to be playing in the second half of 2012)," Moloney said.

"I've been at the club for eight years and haven't had much success and I can't see myself being part of that next premiership plan, so that's a decision I made and I'm seeking finals experience and that's why you play the game.

"You want to play in the big games and you want to play in finals so hopefully I get that opportunity."

Moloney said he decided this week his time at Melbourne had come to an end.

"I made the decision on Monday when I sat down with him (Mark Neeld), but obviously I was thinking about it during the season, and I'm clear in my mind that that's what I wanted to do and I'm just glad that we've parted ways in the right way," Moloney said.

"I've enjoyed my time at Melbourne, I barracked for the club as a kid and all I wanted to do was play for Melbourne, but I just think it's time to move on.

"I didn't want to go overseas and get my manager Bruce to ring up Mark Neeld and say Brent wants to leave. I wanted to sit down with him and talk to him about it and that's what we did."
