Round named in honour of Sir Doug Nicholls

The AFL’s annual round recognising and celebrating indigenous players and culture is named in honour of Sir Doug Nicholls.

Sir Doug, who epitomised the spirit of reconciliation, played 54 games for Fitzroy and was a brilliant all-round athlete. The first Aboriginal person to be knighted, he also served as Governor of South Australia and was devoted to the wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Round 10 of the 2017 season kicks off on Thursday, May 25, when the Geelong Cats host Port Adelaide at Simonds Stadium. The marquee match of Sir Doug Nicholls round is the Dreamtime at the ’G clash between Richmond and Essendon on the Saturday night. The round also includes Melbourne playing Gold Coast in Alice Springs and concludes on Sunday, May 28, when West Coast faces GWS at Domain Stadium.

All 18 clubs will wear special indigenous-themed guernseys during the round.
