BROUGHT TO YOU BYNAB

SECOND-YEAR Fremantle utility Sarah Verrier has capped off a stunning six-point victory over the Western Bulldogs with a NAB AFLW Rising Star nomination, while lifelong Carlton supporter Keeley Sherar was also recognised in round four after being one of the best performing players in the Blues’ disappointing loss to North Melbourne.

Verrier, 19, was recruited by Fremantle with their first selection, 14th overall, in the 2020 NAB AFLW Draft after impressing for Peel Thunder. Despite having an injury-interrupted campaign for Peel in 2020, Verrier has been ultra-durable since landing at Fremantle, not missing a game.

The 168cm Verrier, who in her 15-game career has showcased her ability to be able to play in multiple positions, has established herself as an important member of a Fremantle side which is currently sitting undefeated on top of the ladder. Verrier played her role in the thrilling finish with 11 disposals, three marks and two tackles.

Carlton was given a glance into the future as second-game midfielder Sherar starred in what was an otherwise miserable day for the club.

Eighteen-year-old Sherar, who was recruited at pick No.11 in the 2021 NAB AFLW Draft, impressed in the NAB League competition with the Eastern Ranges last season averaging 14.8 disposals and five tackles a game, while also playing four matches in Hawthorn’s VFLW side.

Sherar showcased composure and physicality in the contest beyond her years, finishing the game with 19 disposals and the second most metres gained for the Blues. Her performance also impressed the coaches as she received a vote in the AFL Coaches’ Association award.

Players are eligible for the NAB AFLW Rising Star if they are 21 years and under as of January 1, 2022, and have not been previously nominated.

Two players will be nominated per home and away round of the NAB AFLW season.
