SCANS have confirmed Carlton midfielder Maddy Guerin has torn her right ACL against Port Adelaide on Sunday.

It's not the only serious knee injury Guerin has suffered in her career, having ruptured her left ACL in February 2020 while playing for Melbourne.

Guerin's right leg was caught in a smother in the first term against the Power. She left the field, received treatment and returned, before her day ended for good in the second quarter after attempting to intercept a mark.

In his post-match press conference, coach Daniel Harford said doctors believed Guerin had escaped structural damage, but that she required scans to properly diagnose the injury.

"Maddy has worked exceptionally hard to develop her game and earn her spot in our midfield group," Carlton head of women's football Brett Munro said.

"She was just starting to hit her stride so it's incredibly disappointing to see Maddy sidelined for the rest of the year, but she has our entire football club supporting her and we'll work with her through her rehab.

"We have no doubt that she will bounce back from this and set her sights on 2023."

Guerin, 22, had been earmarked to lead Carlton's young midfield group in season seven following a series of departures of senior players over the past few years and some stellar pre-season form.

Abbie McKay looks now set to inherit that mantle, along with season six's NAB AFLW Rising Star Mimi Hill, after a strong performance against the Power.
