THE WESTERN Bulldogs have begun their rebuild by taking Gabby Newton with the No.1 selection in the NAB AFLW Draft.

Her versatility means she can also go into the midfield, giving the 2018 premiers a welcome injection of talent after losing stars Katie Brennan and Monique Conti to Richmond over the off-season.

Newton's ability to mark overhead and distribute the football made her the Dogs' first choice.

She stands 175cm and was the premiership captain of the Northern Knights in the NAB League Girls competition.

NEWTON IS NO.1 Dogs select leader of the future with top pick

The club had been pondering whether to take her, winger Georgia Patrikios or utility Lucy McEvoy, all of whom are outstanding prospects.

"This whole lead-up to the draft has just been crazy and I had no idea what was going to happen. To hear my name was so surreal and I'm so excited," Newton said moments after she was drafted.

McEvoy went to Carlton at No.2, while Patrikios - widely considered the third best player in the pool - went to St Kilda at No.5 after nominating the Vic Metro region.

With pick No.3, Brisbane chose diminutive midfielder Lily Postlethwaite, while Greater Western Sydney went for classy line-breaker Maggie Gorham.

Four new teams will enter the competition in 2020: Gold Coast, Richmond, West Coast and St Kilda. The draft order is the reverse of last year's ladder, with picks given to the new sides and compensation selections for teams that lost players to the clubs that are entering the AFLW.

With their first ever selection, the Saints took Calder Cannons captain Patrikios, while the Tigers opted for Sophie Molan from the Greater Western Victoria Rebels with their inaugural pick at No.7.

The Suns brought in defender Serene Watson with their top pick at No.18 to close out the first round of the draft, while the Eagles took Imahra Cameron at No.19.

Melbourne selected Jacqueline Parry with its first pick of the draft at No.54, while Collingwood had to wait until No.67 before picking Kaila Bentvelzen.

As previously revealed, Geelong and the Western Bulldogs both used father-daughter selections on Millie Brown and Isabella Grant.
