BROUGHT TO YOU BYNAB

FIFTEEN-year-old Ella Roberts has helped Peel Thunder to cap off a remarkable rise up the ladder with the WAFLW premiership, booting two goals in the 15-point win over Subiaco.

Thunder finished last in 2019 but knocked off the fancied Lions 4.4 (28) to 2.1 (13).

It's not Roberts' first big finals performance either, having also booted two in Peel Thunder's preliminary final win over East Fremantle the week prior. She played the first three games of the year in the under-18 Rogers Cup before being fast-tracked to the seniors.

In a match played in swirling and difficult conditions, Peel's third term proved to be the difference, with midfielder Chloe Wrigley awarded the Lou Knitter Medal for best on ground.

Subiaco's Maggie MacLachlan did her drafting prospects no harm; having been invited to the upcoming WA portion of the NAB AFLW Combine, she kicked both of her team's goals.

The Lions had only dropped one game in the shortened WAFLW season (seven matches) leading into the Grand Final, and fielded a side headlined by Fremantle stars Hayley Miller and Ange Stannett and GWS' Aimee Schmidt.

Former AFLW players in the side included Tiah Haynes, Danika Pisconeri, Lindal Rohde and Tarnica Golisano.

By contrast, Peel did not have any current AFLW players in its premiership side, with Kate Bartlett, Cassie Davidson, Kira Phillips, Ebony Dowson and Demi Okely having all previously been on a top-flight list.

Meanwhile, former West Coast ruck Pisconeri has been awarded her second consecutive Dhara Kerr Medal as the WAFLW's best and fairest player, lining up for Subiaco.

Lions teammate Abby Dowrick (younger sister of the Eagles' McKenzie) finished second, while Wrigley, Ella Smith (Claremont) and Jess Cox (Swan Districts) tied for third.

Kira Phillips (Peel Thunder) was once again crowned leading goalkicker, and teammate Ebony Bilcich was named the WAFLW's Rising Star.
