MELBOURNE will be sweating on scans for key forward recruit Mia Austin, after she was unable to see out Sunday's win over Greater Western Sydney with an ankle injury.

Austin kicked a career-high four goals in round one, and was leading well at the footy in Sunday's match before landing awkwardly on her left ankle in a contest and limped into the rooms ahead of her teammates at the half time break.

"Not sure yet," Melbourne coach Tom Wilson said if he knew the extent of the injury.

"We'll get scans tomorrow and we'll get that assessed. We're hopeful, but yeah, we don't know the extent."

The Demons saw off an early pressure game from the Giants to run out 48-point victors, as Ryleigh Wotherspoon kicked a career-high three goals. Stalwart ruck Lauren Pearce was a late out for the clash, not getting up in time from preseason knee surgery, replaced by small forward Alyssia Pisano.

"She was really close, she just didn't get up in time. So, where we are in the season, we thought the better approach was not to push," Wilson said.

The Giants have their own injury concern compounding the defeat, with Georgia Garnett set for scans on her left shoulder.

Falling heavily on the shoulder in the opening minutes of the match, Garnett came from the ground to get the joint tested and strapped before ultimately seeing out the game. But she was visibly uncomfortable and struggled to lift her arm.

"She did a terrific job to fight through, but you can see she was playing in a fair bit of pain. So, fingers crossed it's okay. Really fingers crossed. But we'll find out," GWS coach Cam Bernasconi said.

After a successful tagging role on West Coast star Ella Roberts last week, Grace Kòs reprised the role against Melbourne captain Kate Hore. The Giant did a reasonable job, holding Hore to 13 disposals and a goal to three-quarter time, but the coaching staff opted to drop the tag to try and find some attack.

"Try and win the game, be more assertive. I thought Grace did a terrific job again… but we just wanted to get a bit more run and in doing so, I thought someone like Sara Howley came into the game," Bernasconi said.

"It's good to see what both ways will look like because there won't be a hard tag every week, but I think Grace has done a terrific job in the first two weeks in that new position."
