GREATER Western Sydney young gun Scarlett Johnson believes her club's show of solidarity with cross-town rivals Sydney was "more than footy" after a tumultuous week.

In the wake of the events surrounding the Swans' program, the Giants sent a letter to members encouraging fans to head to the SCG and support the Swans' women's team in their double header on Sunday. 

"The leaders came together and posted that statement. I think it was really important, because this is more than footy at the end of the day," Johnson told AFL.com.au's Tagged.

"Obviously they are a big rival, but this is about women supporting women and this being bigger than football."

Richmond veteran Sarah Hosking praised the Giants for their role in supporting the match.

"This is the whole point of why sport is bigger than just the sport itself," Hosking said.

"It's about community and everything that comes with that. I want to commend you all for the role that you guys played there in being able to support the Swans AFLW."

Giants fans won't get to see their exciting draftee Johnson in full flight this year, after she hurt her ACL during the pre-season. 

Johnson, taken by the Giants with pick No.2 in last year's draft, revealed the setback was her first serious injury, but she's making steady progress and is doing everything in her power to set herself up for a big 2027 season.

"It actually feels pretty normal at the moment. I'm getting back to walking and without a limp. It's one month post-operation, I'm feeling pretty normal," she said.

"I know the fact that I won’t be able to play this year, so I’m looking at it as an extra long pre-season, getting in the gym and trying to improve myself in every way I can before next season.

"The club has been so good with it. All of the players have been so welcoming, they're getting around me and keeping me involved in any way they can."

That has involved sitting in on meetings, watching plenty of vision with the forwards and doing extras in the gym. 

Experienced teammates have praised Johnson's energy and enthusiasm since arriving at the club, while Johnson credits new teammate Poppy Boltz and NRL partner Cooper Johns for making her transition interstate so smooth.

"They've been so good ever since I've moved to Sydney, playing that mum and dad role for me. It's my first time living out of home, they've helped me settle in so well in Sydney and I couldn't imagine it any other way."
