ESSENDON'S Nathan Lovett-Murray has credited the club's fitness coaches for helping him get his body right for the rigours of AFL football.

The 29-year-old was among the Bombers' best on Saturday night, gathering a season-high 26 possessions and seven marks in the 66-point win over Greater Western Sydney.

It was Lovett-Murray's fourth straight match since he missed three weeks due to a hamstring injury.

"I'm getting a bit older so I have got to be a bit smarter with my body and how I train and prepare," Lovett-Murray told AFL.com.au after the match.

To that end, Lovett-Murray said Essendon's fitness and high performance coach Dean Robinson, nicknamed 'The Weapon', had played a big part in helping him give himself the best chance to play good football.

"He has come in and taught me how to look after my body a lot better," Lovett-Murray said.

"If I do that, and do all the right things, the footy will take care of itself."

The big victory lifted Essendon to the top of the ladder with an 8-1 win-loss record, albeit with West Coast (7-1) due to take on the Fremantle later on Sunday.

Lovett-Murray said the team was a bit shaky at the start of the match, when the Giants tackled hard and offered a strong contest at the footy, but eventually got things sorted to come away with the four premiership points.

"The boys are really coming together and are starting to play the game plan and what the coaches want and that's the most important thing.

"If we can do that, we should get the wins."
