MELBOURNE will use its three-day off-site camp in Sorrento to establish Paul Roos' game plan, as well as introducing the principles of Leading Teams in to the club.

The Demons set off for the Victorian coastal town, following a training session at Casey Fields on Monday morning.

Melbourne football manager Josh Mahoney said there would be a specific focus on the discussion of team tactics and the strategies the club hopes to implement next season.

"With the number of changes that we made in the off-season, with 11 new players and six new coaches coming to the club, we felt that it was important to have a couple of days away to build relationships," Mahoney told melbournefc.com.au.

"The focus of this camp will be the coaches introducing the game plan and Leading Teams facilitating relationship building activities between the players and the coaches. It’s not a training camp as such; it’s more about education and spending time together.

"The coaches have been working hard on the game plan and we’ll be presenting this to the players during this period. We’ll then work on implementing it through the rest of the pre-season and leading into season 2014."

There are a number of reasons why the Demons decided to stay local for their off-site retreat, instead of following other clubs on intense overseas training camps.

"Every club has spending priorities and at this stage our priorities are elsewhere," Mahoney said.

"We thought the benefit of spending a couple of days away at a location not far from Melbourne was exactly what we were looking for."

The players will participate in a bike and swim session on Wednesday morning, however the physical side of training will not be the primary emphasis.

The last time the club was in Sorrento was in far different circumstances, with then coach Mark Neeld under intense scrutiny following two losses of a combined 227 points at the start of season 2013.
