THE AFL will confirm details of the unprecedented Grand Final venue switch at 1.30pm AEST, with the game's showpiece event set to be held away from Victoria for the first time in history.

The impact of the global COVID-19 pandemic will force the 2020 Toyota AFL Grand Final away from the MCG, with governments from Queensland, Western Australia and South Australia putting forward their case to host the season decider in recent weeks.

Gillon McLachlan revealed on Tuesday that the League had accepted a recommendation from the Commission as to the new venue for the Grand Final, with the AFL CEO to confirm its location and time later this afternoon.

The Grand Final has been a daytime event but in recent years there has been increasing pressure to hold the event at night. It has been played away from the MCG just once in the last 74 years, when it was hosted by Waverley Park in 1991 due to reconstruction works.

Four other grounds, including the Junction Oval, East Melbourne Cricket Ground, Lake Oval and Princes Park, have held the Grand Final since 1898.

The AFL reviewed bids to host this season's Grand Final at the Gabba in Queensland, the newly built Optus Stadium in Western Australia and the recently reconstructed Adelaide Oval in South Australia.
