Big injury returns and the unveiling of a predicted prodigy are the features of a crucial weekend of Smithy’s VFL action.

Sydney ruckman Tom Hickey will make his return from a knee injury in the Swans’ must-win clash against Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval on Sunday, Western Bulldogs’ flyer Laitham Vandermeer plays his first game since breaking his leg in February, Sandringham will see St Kilda star Jack Billings for the first time after his own broken leg and GWS’s Melbourne recruit Toby Bedford will don the charcoal and orange for the first time against after overcoming a hamstring injury.

Werribee and Williamstown captains Nick Coughlan and Cam Polson have also overcome injuries to play their welcome first games for the season in the South-Western Derby at Avalon Airport Oval on Sunday.

The Swans will also hand debuts to their top 2022 NAB AFL National Draft selection in Drouin goalsneak Jacob Konstanty after he overcame bone stress in his legs and highly-touted 2023 Swans Academy option Caiden Cleary.

There is also an intriguing first VFL game for Footscray Category B Rookie recruit James O’Donnell, 21, the son of former Australian cricketer Simon O’Donnell.

Simon and his father Kevin both played at the highest level for St Kilda, with James just making the decision to return to footy from cricket.

There is plenty of quality preparing to run out at Blacktown alongside Bedford, with the Giants selecting Adam Kennedy, Jake Riccardi, Leek Aleer and Conor Stone alongside another debutant in Giants Academy prospect Harvey Thomas, while the Lions have named Jarryd Lyons, Darcy Fort and Callum Ah Chee.

Southport regains co-captain Mike Manteit and wingman Jay Lockhart for its clash with Footscray but has suffered two huge injury blows, with the in-form Mackenzie Willis injuring his ACL before last week’s loss to Brisbane Lions and Zac Foot to miss five weeks with a back injury.

The Bulldogs have also added Hayden Crozier, Mitch Hannan and Robbie McComb to Vandermeer and O’Donnell.

With Sydney naming Hickey, Konstanty and Cleary alongside Indhi Kirk, the talented son of club great Brett, forward Harry Morrison and returning AFL debutants Will Gould and Corey Warner, Northern Bullants needed some good news at selection, but could not have received much worse, with co-captain Liam Mackie sidelined for 12 weeks with an ankle problem.

Fellow key Harrison Kennedy is also injured, with the Bullants handing debuts to Whittlesea’s Cameron Wild and Greensborough’s Ben Ham, while Sean Martin also comes back in.

Coughlan will be joined in the Werribee team by Noah Lever, Sam Paea and Lucas Rocci, while 100-gamer Jake Greiser returns for Williamstown after being a late out against Coburg, but Darby Henderson will miss with concussion.

Hugh Greenwood could make his VFL debut for North Melbourne after only being named as an emergency for the AFL team, but the Kangaroos will welcome No.6 draft pick George Wardlaw back to take to Gold Coast after he was rested from the trip to Sydney.

The Suns have six AFL-listed players coming in and four going out, with top draft pick Elijah Hollands in and forwards Joel Jeffrey and Alex Sexton as AFL emergencies, with the injured Sam Day the only out not to be playing in the later game.

Coburg also has some significant inclusions for its clash with Box Hill Hawks, with Tom McKenzie and Ryan Sturgess returning from injury and Trent Warren also called in – McKenzie’s Round 1 appearance where he injured his hamstring is the only game between the trio this season.

The Hawks have boosted their undefeated team with the returns of Emerson Jeka and Cooper Stephens, while Jack Scrimshaw, Lloyd Meek and Finn Maginness are in as AFL emergencies and Morwell’s Tristen Waack earns a debut.

Tom De Koning has been named in Carlton’s team alongside Lachie Plowman and Jordan Boyd, but he has been listed as managed and must be considered unlikely to play, and the Blues also won’t have top grade debutant Alex Cincotta or ruckman Alex Mirkov for its game against Sandringham at Ikon Park.

The Zebras have also named Jack Bytel and Tom Campbell alongside Billings, while draftee Isaac Keeler will return from injury to debut on his 19th birthday and VFL-listed Sam Latreille also plays his first game, with Tim Membrey rushed back into the AFL line-up despite a quiet return in the loss to Frankston.

Trent Bianco, Ed Allan and Tom Wilson return to Collingwood's side for its Victoria Park blockbuster against old enemy Essendon, although the Magpies will be without suspended skipper Campbell Hustwaite, as well as Nathan Kreuger and Trey Ruscoe who both look reset for an AFL recall.

The Bombers also look set to be lose several stars to AFL selection, with Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti, Ben Hobbs and Massimo D'Ambrosio named among the outs.

Casey Demons have brought in the big guns for their clash with Richmond at Casey Fields, with Ben Brown, Tom McDonald, Adam Tomlinson and Jake Melksham all named. The inclusion of tall timber means Ryan Valentine makes way despite kicking three goals in last week's win over Essendon.

The Tigers regain Jack Ross among three changes to the side that went down to a fighting loss to Carlton last Friday night.

Frankston and Port Melbourne have both made two changes for their Monday night battle at Kinetic Stadium on ANZAC Day eve. The Dolphine have lost Taine Barlow and Austin Bradke to injury, while the Borough will be without Aiden Fyfe and Paul Hunter.

All matches in the 2023 Smithy’s VFL and rebel VFLW seasons will be live streamed free via the AFL website and AFL Live Official App.

Smithy’s VFL broadcast partner, the Seven Network, will show one weekly game live and free on the Seven Network in Victoria and on 7Plus nationally.

Casey Radio 97.7FM will also broadcast Footscray Bulldogs vs Southport Sharks at ETU Stadium and 3WBC 94.1FM taking the Box Hill Hawks v Coburg clash.
