All the teams for Round 18 of the Smithy’s VFL.

Williamstown has made just one change for Ben Jolley’s record-breaking 303rd game against his original club Essendon under the Friday night lights at DSV Stadium.

Jolley, 37, will pass former Port Melbourne and Seagulls great Bill Swan to become the VFL/VFA games record holder when he runs out for a match the Seagulls must win to stay in touch with the top six.

Heir apparent Will Jury comes in for the home side for the milestone occasion. The young midfielder who hails from Jolley’s home club of Strathmore has been included after impressing in Jolley’s 300th game last month. He replaces forward Nathan Colenso as Williamstown beefs up its midfield against a Bombers’ team riding high after consecutive wins over Gold Coast Suns and Geelong.

Essendon has bolstered its goal kicking strength, with Sam Weideman returning to the VFL after failing to kick a goal at AFL level for the past seven weeks, while small forward Jye Menzie has also been sent back. Youngster Solly McKay has also been selected to replace omitted trio Jake Brown, Joel Fitzgerald and Michael Kiraly.

Coburg has recalled full back Harry Nolan for the big job of taking on Brodie Grundy when the Lions host Casey Demons on Saturday, with Sam Mason and Ryan Sturgess back from injury.

As well as Grundy, the Demons have also included highly-touted Gippsland Power draft prospect Zane Duursma after the conclusion of the U18 National Championships, while Michael Hibberd, Charlie Spargo, Josh Smith and George Grey also come in.

Brisbane Lions and Geelong teams are set to have a significant injection of quality for their contest at Brighton Homes Arena on Saturday, with the clubs adding 14 AFL-listed players between them at selection.

While at least one of those for each club will obviously come out when the AFL teams are finalised, the Cats have named Irish games record holder Zach Tuohy for his first VFL game since 2019 among six changes, plus tall defender Esava Ratugolea, while Brandan Parfitt is back from his broken hand, Phoenix Foster and Osca Riccardi return from injury and Oisin Mullin has been selected after being the AFL sub last week. Mullin, Tuohy and Ratugolea are AFL emergencies.

The Lions have added eight AFL-listed players to the team that thrashed Northern Bullants a fortnight ago, including AFL emergencies James Tunstill and Kai Lohmann, plus key forward Tom Fullarton, key defender Darcy Gardiner and midfielders Jarryd Lyons, Rhys Mathieson, Deven Robertson and Henry Smith, with Bailey Gordon (concussion) the only forced change.

Richmond draftee Seth Campbell will play just his second game of the season and his first since Round 2 after being named to return from an adductor injury in the Tigers’ battle with Box Hill Hawks at Swinburne Centre on Saturday. He returns to the team alongside AFL emergencies Hugo Ralphsmith and Samson Ryan, while Maurice Rioli will also play VFL after being dropped.

Box Hill has beefed up its height and experience with ruckman Lloyd Meek coming in alongside defender James Blanck and swingman Damian Mascitti, replacing injured trio Changkuoth Jiath, Henry Hustwaite and Jaylon Thorpe.

Carlton has surprisingly named No.1 ruckman Marc Pittonet to return from injury through the VFL and take on Port Melbourne star Sam Naismith at IKON Park on Saturday. The Blues have also picked Lewis Young, Zac Fisher and Corey Durdin, plus a debutant in Echuca teenager Jack Maruff, with Ollie Hollands and Jesse Motlop promoted.

The Borough regains midfield bull Josh Green from a dislocated thumb, with Nick Stuhldreier recalled and North Melbourne recruit Sam Collins to play his first game for his new club.

Josh Porter gets another chance to impress in the ruck for Werribee after being recalled for injured rookie Kobe Annand against Frankston duo Tom Roberts and Jimmy Rendell, with Southport recruit Michael Selsby also winning his spot back.

The Dolphins who ruled forwards Bailey Lambert and Josh Butland out for the season this week, have midfielders Kai Owens and Lachie Riley back alongside key forward Matt Johnson and another debutant in 17-year-old De La Salle product Luke Lloyd, with in-form backman Taine Barlow to miss with injury.

Northern Bullants coach Brodie Holland has wielded the axe for their clash against Footscray, with six players dropped after last week’s big defeat to Werribee, including ballwinners Cam Wild and Jackson Barling and goalkicker Saad El-Hawli. Key defender Baker Smith returns from suspension, while ruckman Finnbar Maley is also back in.

Mitch Hannan and Riley Garcia return to the Bulldogs’ team, with Josh Bruce, Buku Khamis and Oskar Baker promoted and Harvey Gallagher rested.

St Kilda forward Matt Allison will play his first game of the year when he returns from a pre-season foot injury in Sandringham’s trip to the AIA Centre to meet Collingwood on Sunday.

Allison comes in alongside fellow AFL-listers Jack Billings, Nick Coffield, Liam Stocker, Ryan Byrnes and Leo Connolly, pending AFL selection, while Vic Metro half forward Harvey Johnston will make his debut.

The Magpies have also stocked up, with Ash Johnson and VFL debutant Billy Frampton down from the AFL team, while Trent Bianco, Nathan Kreuger and Jakob Ryan also return, but they have lost league great Tom Wilson, who will miss at the least the rest of the home and away season with a hamstring injury, while Dan McStay was promoted and Neville Jetta among those left out.

GWS has managed veteran Phil Davis and youngster Max Gruzewski for its Sunday morning contest with ladder-leader Gold Coast Suns at Manuka Oval, with Jacob Wehr heading the inclusions.

The Suns, meanwhile, have added Brayden Fiorini, Jy Farrar and Connor Budarick among four changes, with Elijah Hollands promoted and Bodhi Uwland injured.

All matches in the 2023 Smithy’s VFL and rebel VFLW seasons will be live streamed free via the AFL website and AFL Live Official App.

Smithy’s VFL broadcast partner, the Seven Network, will show one weekly game live and free on the Seven Network in Victoria and on 7Plus nationally. This week’s game will be Collingwood vs Sandringham.
