Full round six preview: Dees v Blues blockbuster, finals race heats up

The finals picture will look a lot clearer at the conclusion of this weekend, with a number of "eight-point" matches in the round six fixture

THE FINALS picture will look a lot clearer at the conclusion of this weekend, with a number of "eight-point" matches in the round six fixture.

Supporters will not be permitted to attend NAB AFLW matches from Saturday, March 14, due to the everchanging nature of the COVID-19 pandemic.

    Friday, March 13

Geelong v North Melbourne, GMHBA Stadium, 7.10pm AEDT

    • Geelong is now two from two after dropping its first three matches. The forward line has been continually tweaked, but the combination of Phoebe McWilliams, Kate Darby, Anna Teague and Georgia Clarke seems to have done the trick.
    • While the Kangaroos can't completely guarantee themselves a finals spot if they get this win over the line, the wheels would have to fall off and spontaneously combust for the team to miss April action, if indeed they get Friday night's four points.
    • Tip: North Melbourne is on a roll, and while Geelong plays well at home, the Kangaroos' midfield runs just too deep. Roos by 19 points.
    00:19

    Saturday, March 14

Brisbane v Collingwood, Hickey Park, 2.10pm AEST

    • Brisbane suffered its first loss for the year, falling to Fremantle on Sunday. The Lions have once again benefited from a healthy list this season, but looked somewhat literally off the pace against the rampaging Dockers.
    • It's been an up-and-down – but still vastly improved – season from Collingwood this year, but the Magpies will take some confidence from their comfortable win over Western Bulldogs. Chloe Molloy's best position for the side – forward, midfield or even back to defence – is still to be determined.
    • Tip: As a cross-conference game, this has big ramifications for both sides, with effectively a bonus four points on offer. Brisbane has been more consistent this season, and should just get over the line by five points.
    00:34

St Kilda v Richmond, RSEA Park, 5.10pm AEDT

    • The Saints had their opportunities but were ultimately outclassed by Carlton last week. They've been competitive in most games, but have struggled to hit the scoreboard, kicking the second-fewest goals this year.
    • Richmond's winless season rolls on. It's been a frustrating season for the Tigers, who have kicked the third-fewest goals, given away the most free kicks and conceded the highest number of points.
    • Tip: St Kilda has been close in a number of games this year, but will be too strong for the beleaguered Richmond. Saints by 17 points.
    00:37

Melbourne v Carlton, TIO Traeger Park, 6.10pm ACST

    • Melbourne comfortably has the strongest defence in the competition, conceding just 16.8 points a match. The addition of Libby Birch has been enormous, as has the move of Daisy Pearce behind the ball.
    • Carlton's defence hasn't been quite as stingy, but Kerryn Harrington and Charlotte Wilson are building some good form together. Both are capable of strong intercept marks and have neat foot skills, setting up the rebound well.
    • Tip: Second v third in Conference B, this is crunch time. The winner of the Alice Springs clash will have a handy four-point buffer over the loser, the latter falling back into the chasing pack. Blues by three points.
    00:36

    Sunday, March 15

Western Bulldogs v Fremantle, VU Whitten Oval, 1.10pm AEDT

    • Things are starting to unravel at VU Whitten Oval. The Dogs sit 11th for disposals, last for long kicks, second-last for contested possessions but oddly enough, second for clearances.
    • It's just full-steam ahead for Fremantle. The Dockers are only the second team to be undefeated after five rounds, with Brisbane in 2017 also notching up the achievement.
    • Tip: Fremantle isn't quite as strong on the road as it is at home, but the Dockers will be too powerful up forward for the Bulldogs. Dockers by 26 points.
    00:36

Adelaide v Greater Western Sydney, Hisense Stadium, 2.40pm ACDT

    • Adelaide has one of the longest injury lists in the competition, but will be hoping Erin Phillips (soreness) and Eloise Jones (shoulder) are available for this must-win clash. Scoring once inside 50 is a huge issue; the Crows are last-place in the competition with a percentage rate of just 24.1.
    • GWS is facing a season-defining fortnight with matches against fellow Conference A sides Adelaide and Geelong. Star midfielder Alyce Parker bounced back to her best against Richmond, finishing with 24 disposals (up from 11 the week before).
    • Tip: Both sides have been hot and cold at the best of times this year, but Adelaide just runs a little deeper. Crows by seven points.
    00:23

West Coast v Gold Coast, Mineral Resources Park, 2.10pm AWST

    • West Coast would be hoping to rebound after a very poor performance against a strong Melbourne side. Hitting the scoreboard has been the biggest issue; the Eagles are averaging a competition-low 15.4 points a match.
    • Gold Coast is facing the second leg of a fairly hellish travel schedule, backing up a game in Mackay with one in Perth. The Suns tired as last week's game progressed – could it be an issue again?
    • Tip: The Suns are still the most outside of chances of making finals and have more to play for. Gold Coast by 14 points.

Saints hold Tigers to lowest ever AFLW score, claim second win

St Kilda kept Richmond goalless in windy conditions at Moorabbin on Saturday to register their second AFLW victory

RICHMOND'S agonising opening NAB AFLW season has continued, becoming the first ever side to fail to kick a goal in its 39-point loss to St Kilda.

The Saints were too strong all over the park, coping well in a howling wind at RSEA Park in the 6.6. (42) to 0.3 (3) point loss.

SAINTS v TIGERS Full match coverage and stats

The Tigers' score of three is the lowest ever AFLW tally, undercutting West Coast's and Geelong's seven points recorded in round five 2020 and the 2019 preliminary final respectively.

    04:37

Play was so heavily weighted to one area of the ground, the inside-50 count in both the first and second quarters read 11-1 to the club headquarters end.

St Kilda was very efficient in front of goal, with rookie and former volleyballer Gabby Seymour no match for powerful Saint Caitlin Greiser.

WATCH IT LIVE How to follow the AFLW this weekend

With fans locked out due to the coronavirus, the only crowd noise came from unselected players from both sides, and Greiser was a favourite of her teammates.

She booted the first three goals of the match – including one from 20 metres out that sailed above the goalposts and nearly out of the ground – and took three marks.

    00:45

The Saints piled on the pain in the third, adding 15 points while the Tigers didn't manage a single inside-50 entry.

In tough conditions for all players, hard-nosed midfielder Rosie Dillon (17 disposals) was strong in the clinches, while Georgia Patrikios (14) added her usual class on the outside.

FULL FIXTURE Every round, every game

Classy Richmond midfielder Mon Conti ran her heart out, and was often caught by St Kilda players attempting to break lines without support from teammates.

Conti finished with a game-high 22 disposals and left the field in tears after the heavy loss.

    00:36

    A game without fans
With supporters locked out of games this round due to the coronavirus, the only fans present were players from both sides who were injured or not selected. The Tigers ran out waving to their honour guard of support staff, while being the home side, the Saints pumped crowd noise out in a tongue-in-cheek move. The St Kilda players even attempted to start their own Mexican wave at one point.

    What next for Richmond?
The Tigers will be hoping to get skipper Katie Brennan back, with the midfielder-forward having missed two weeks with concussion. In a worrying sign, Kate Dempsey (ill), Lauren Tesoriero (ill) and Laura McClelland (suspended) are the only other best-21 players to be sidelined. The Tigers had very little run on the outside and were unable to handball themselves clear, instead getting bogged down in some strong St Kilda congestion. It doesn’t get any easier from here, with Brisbane and Adelaide waiting. Tesoriero remains in quarantine – but isn't ill – after her housemate returned from Japan.

    Saints on the rise
Georgia Patrikios has rightly earned her fair share of plaudits this year, but it was the work of fellow midfielders Rosie Dillon and Nicola Xenos that caught the eye. Former VFLW Hawk Dillon is growing in confidence and composure as the season progresses, not just a fierce tackler on the inside but freeing up teammates in space with clever hands. Xenos was noted for her elite speed in the under-18s, and her neat kicking skills were on show against the Tigers.

    An eerie coincidence
Not only is Richmond the first side to be held goalless in the AFLW competition, the side was the first to be held goalless at the top level since Richmond's VFL side in 1961. The Tigers' opponent that day? St Kilda.

    Say what?
"It was a bit of an odd feeling, not quite the atmosphere we had in round one. Having said that, the best decision was made and we got the four points," – St Kilda co-captain Rhi Watt

"It's life and it's footy, isn't it? There's a lot of things thrown at you. At the end of the day, you just have to go out there and play footy. The girls want to get on the park, they want to compete, they want an opposition. While it's a bit sad we can't have a crowd, it's totally understandable. It's important the games still go on as long as we can, because you can't be what you can't see. So, the broadcasters are on board, we can still role-model through the television. That's really important in terms of society, influencing society and building respect for women," – St Kilda coach Peta Searle

"There were tough moments. We still, at times, played the way we wanted to play. We spoke about it after the game, we had really good opportunities to hit the scoreboard and be successful, but unfortunately we can't quite do it for long enough. It's going to take us a while to get our fitness base to where it needs to be to allow the girls to defend and then attack. It feels like we're working really hard defensively, and we just have no petrol tickets to spend going forward." – Richmond coach Tom Hunter

    What’s next?
St Kilda has a challenge against an in-form Collingwood on Sunday at Victoria Park, while Richmond's long season continues, hosting Brisbane at Ikon Park on Friday night.
