INAUGURAL Brisbane forward Jess Wuetschner has been taking time away from competitive football to focus on her mental health and wellbeing.

The finals specialist has not played since round four this year, and has been open about her mental health struggles in the past.

Wuetschner will continue to be involved in the Lions' AFLW program and train with her teammates.

“I’ve needed to focus on my mental health for a while now,” Wuetschner told the club website.

“Football has been a huge part of my life for a very long time, so it was incredibly hard to make that decision.”

“I’ve already made great progress in the last six weeks. Thank you to those that have reached out, I look forward to getting back out and playing football when I am ready."

Wuetschner has played 38 career games, including three grand finals and last year's premiership, kicking 37 goals in that time.
