NINA Morrison has been on Geelong's list for the entirety of its AFLW history, and she's never seen her side play better footy.
The Cats have marched into second position and a qualifying final off the back of 10 straight wins, becoming the highest-scoring team in an AFLW home-and-away season (871 points across 12 games).
After years of promise, the co-captain has seen the program and performance finally turn the corner.
"I think we've been disappointed the last couple of seasons, to be honest, about our how our performance has been. I've always looked at the group we've had and the list profile and thought we could be playing better footy," Morrison told reporters on Monday.
"From that sense, I'd look at our performance, and it doesn't feel like it has come out of the blue. We've just unlocked a few things that were already there; it's just about being able to do it together and at the right time.
"It comes back to having so many people across the board playing well. That's been the cornerstone of our performance this year, relying on the performance of all – no one needs to go above and beyond to pull the cape on and do anything extraordinary. It's just people doing the little things well, and it's what we've tried to focus on."
While most of the attention has gone to the extraordinary form of Georgie Prespakis and the incredibly deep forward line, Morrison's fine season has gone under the radar.
Saturday’s final against Melbourne will be the former No. 1 pick’s 75th game, a milestone reached despite two knee reconstructions in 2019 and 2020. She is averaging a career-high 24.3 disposals and has already kicked a season-best eight goals.
"We had some pretty significant change coming into this year, obviously with coaching staff, off-field staff – it's probably a combo of those off-field changes, and then just being able to unleash a new level of my own personal development," Morrison said.
"I've got areas I want to get better at. I feel like my contest work and inside stuff has been really strong this year, just continuing to find ways to get better in my game."
Morrison has taken on the co-captaincy this year alongside half-back flanker Becky Webster, the pair having been among the first AFLW draftees at the club, and they're ushering in a new and improved version of the Cats.
"I've been pretty fortunate to come in at a time where things around me seem to be humming as well," she said.
"It makes that role a bit easier when I've got Becky to lean on too, but you've got staff and coaches who are playing their role to a tee as well, it means you aren't having to take on those loads and responsibilities too. It's been a nice year to come in alongside Becky.
"Across our career, Meg (McDonald, former captain) has always been such a strong leader and someone who is always in our corner as well. Being able to think back to how she led and if there are things we can take from her leadership. We've got such strong people around us in Mick (Stinear, coach) and Dom (Condo, head of footy) who are can help support Becky and I."
