GOLD Coast forward Kate Surman says the Suns need to "earn back the respect" of the AFLW, following their winless, wooden-spoon season of 2021.

"We didn't quite get it right over the first two years. The first year (2020), we did well, but we only won two and a half games, and we made finals. When you play footy, if you're winning, the stuff that's not going quite right gets pushed under the rug," Surman told Credit to the Girls.

"With us not winning, it was apparent all the things that weren't going right. Every team has it, we just happened to have it a lot more, particularly when you're losing a lot.

"The change in the culture, and the shift in the coach (Cameron Joyce), being a little more authoritative, is super important for our playing group."
