Double injury blow sours Power's win over dogged Blues

Highlights: Port Adelaide v Carlton The Power and Blues clash in round two

PORT Adelaide has recorded a hard-fought 16-point victory over Carlton as the Blues continued to tantalise their fans at Adelaide Oval on Saturday.

The 13.10 (88) to 11.6 (72) encounter was marred by potentially serious injuries to Blues star Charlie Curnow and Power pair Jack Watts and Karl Amon.

Curnow left the field with a minute remaining in the first quarter, the forward clutching at his left knee after jostling with Port defender Dan Houston on the wing.

POWER SWITCH OFF BLUES Full match coverage and stats

The 22-year-old jogged along the boundary line during the second quarter but eventually returned to the bench where he remained for the rest of the match.

Watts was stretchered off in the final term after the 28-year-old's right ankle was caught under Dale Thomas as the Blues veteran tackled him to the ground.

Karl Amon spent the most of the match on the sidelines after suffering a first-quarter knee injury.

Power ruckman Scott Lycett was best on ground collecting 25 possessions (17 contested), 34 hitouts and 10 clearances.

Tom Rockliff finished with 37 possessions and 12 clearances, Steven Motlop booted three goals (including two in the fourth quarter), Brad Ebert kicked three as well while Travis Boak continued his midfield resurgence with 33 disposals.

SEASON IN DOUBT 'Most likely a broken leg' for Watts: Hinkley

Patrick Cripps was dominant for the Blues while Paddy Dow and Sam Petrevski-Seton were busy as well.

After a free-flowing end-to-end opening, showers swept over Adelaide Oval at the start of the second half and it was Carlton which enjoyed the change in weather conditions.

They claimed the lead for a few minutes in the third term.

ANALYSIS How the Power managed to 'weather the storm' against the Blues

But the Power stood up in the big moments in the fourth quarter, with first-year players Zak Butters and Xavier Duursma setting up Motlop's goals to give the home side some breathing space.

It wasn't a big outing for Justin Westhoff in his 250th but it's the first time the Power have saluted one of his milestones – the team lost in his 50th, 100th, 150th and 200th matches.

BIG BLUE DOWN Carlton sweats on scans for star forward

MEDICAL ROOM
Port Adelaide: Ken Hinkley said after the match that Jack Watts had either broken his leg – which would mean season over – or suffered a syndesmosis ankle sprain, which would likely mean months in recovery. Teammate Karl Amon suffered medial ligament damage to his knee in the first quarter.

Carlton: The Blues are hopeful Charlie Curnow won't miss any footy after he jarred and twisted his knee in the first quarter but he'll have scans to make sure there's no significant damage.

NEXT UP
Port Adelaide heads to the Gabba to take on the improved Brisbane on Saturday night. The Power will be chasing their third win of the season. The Blues host the Swans at Marvel Stadium in what will be a desperate encounter on Saturday afternoon. One team will record their first win of the season while the other will be languishing at 0-3.
