Giants into top four, pile more pain on spluttering Swans

Highlights: Sydney v GWS The Swans and Giants clash in round six

GREATER Western Sydney has responded to last week's shock loss to Fremantle with a commanding 41-point win over the Swans at the SCG on Saturday night, and virtually ended Sydney's finals chances in the process.

Both sides suffered a key loss before the bounce with Lance Franklin (hamstring) and Phil Davis (ankle) ruled out of the contest, and the absence of the Swans' superstar forward proved too much for the home side to overcome.

GIANTS CRUSH SWANS Full match coverage and stats

Led by the emerging Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper and fellow midfielders Josh Kelly and Stephen Coniglio, plus rebounding defensive duo Nick Haynes and Zac Williams, the Giants dominated the second half booting 11 goals to five.

Taranto and Hopper combined for 63 possessions and 13 clearances, while Coniglio snagged four goals to go with his 24 touches, and Haynes grabbed 12 marks across half-back in a brilliant performance.

INJURIES MOUNTING Cameron sweats on Coniglio and Whitfield

Co-captains Luke Parker (25 disposals and two goals) and Josh Kennedy (32 disposals) tried hard for the home side, with Zak Jones, Dane Rampe and Harry Cunningham solid contributors for the Swans.

Sydney started the match well with the opening goal to Jordan Dawson, before the Giants kicked four in a row, and the contest looked like being a rout.

But the Swans worked their way back into the game with some greater intensity around the footy, and when they grabbed the first three majors of the second term, they incredibly took back the lead.

'VERY MINOR' Swans hope hamstrung Bud will face Lions

But the lapses in concentration and poor skill errors that has cost Sydney all year came back to haunt it again, and the Giants' band of star midfielders took full advantage.

Jeremy Cameron, Toby Greene and Daniel Lloyd all booted three goals for the Giants as they piled on 11 goals to five after the long break.

It was a powerful win for the Giants without the leadership of Davis and Callan Ward (knee), but on the flip side, the loss spells trouble for the Swans.

Another home loss leaves them with just one win for the season ahead of next week's tough trip to Brisbane to take on the resurgent Lions.

MEDICAL ROOM
Sydney: Callum Sinclair came from the field in the first half with a cut to the head but was able to resume his battle with Shane Mumford after getting it taped up.

GWS: Lachie Whitfield copped a corked thigh in the second term and while he played out the game with it heavily strapped, the star Giant battled to run and spent long periods playing as a deep forward. Sam Reid looked to have suffered an ankle injury late in the game.

NEXT UP
The Giants head back to their second home at UNSW Canberra Oval to take on St Kilda on Saturday afternoon, while the struggling Swans will travel north to take on Brisbane at the Gabba in the Saturday twilight fixture.
