AFL Chief Executive Officer Andrew Demetriou today announced the appointment, effective immediately, of Gillon McLachlan to the new role of Deputy Chief Executive Officer as part of a realigned executive structure for the organisation.

Mr McLachlan has been Chief Operating Officer at the AFL since 2008, with major responsibilities including broadcasting, stadium infrastructure, venue agreements, fixturing and digital media, which this year has seen the very successful establishment of AFL Media .

Mr Demetriou said the impending and recent departures from the executive team of Adrian Anderson (Football Operations), Christina Ogg (Human Resources) and Andrew Catterall (Strategy & Marketing) provided an opportunity to review and reposition the AFL’s executive structure.

“It is timely to establish a new look team at the executive level to ensure the AFL maintains an organisational structure that is aligned with our future strategic priorities,” Mr Demetriou said.

“Gill has made a significant contribution to the AFL across a number of strategic fronts and this promotion is well deserved.”

Further to the appointment of a Deputy CEO, the AFL has engaged an executive search firm to fill the following executive positions:

  1. General Manager, Football Operations
  2. General Manager, People and Culture
  3. General Manager, Fan Development & Customer Acquisition

Positions will be advertised during January and strong candidates are expected from within and outside the AFL community.

In the interim, Mr McLachlan has also agreed to be Acting General Manager, Football Operations until that appointment is made in the New Year.

As previously advised, Sue Clark will continue as Acting General Manager, Human Resources and Sam Graham will continue as Acting General Manager, Strategy.
