First year umps reap the benefits of the AFL's Umpiring Mentor Program
Two of the Western Region Football League's first year Umpires received recognition for their efforts and dedication by being appointed to umpire in the Under 18's Grand Finals this year.
Umpires Tim Carrington, aged 23, and Tedros Belayneh, aged 21, participated in the AFL Umpiring Mentor Program which is specifically designed for first year umpires.
The AFL Umpiring Mentor program provides new umpires to local Leagues with a dedicated mentor and an AFL starter’s kit which incorporated an AFL sports bag, a green uniform, AFL sweatbands, a DVD, a drink bottle and even a whistle!
“It is a credit to these two Umpires, their respective Mentors and the WRFL Umpire Coaches that they have achieved a Grand Final in their first year,” said Terry Gunn, Manager WRFL Umpiring Department.
“It also clearly demonstrates that the AFL Mentoring system is successful for those who want to actively participate.
“I should also highlight that Tedros commenced with the WRFL as part of a multicultural South African induction group.
“Tedros, formally from Ethiopia, has thoroughly enjoyed his umpiring and it shows. He is a fantastic runner and is so keen to listen and learn. He also likes the extra money as well!”
Anyone living in Melbourne’s western region who would like to give umpiring a go in 2009 is encouraged to visit the Western Region Football League’s website, www.wrfl.asn.au, or ring the head office on (03) 9315 1377.
