SYDNEY has announced its first player signing ahead of its inaugural AFLW season.

Academy product Ruby Sargent-Wilson makes history as the first women's player for the club after a call from Head Coach Scott Gowans last week to share the good news.

"It’s an honour. To be a part of the inaugural team, it’s hard to put into words," Sargent-Wilson told the club website.

"I know how much this means to the Swans, and the effort they have had to put in to get into the competition. It fills me with so much pride – it takes a lot to pull on that guernsey, it represents more than running out to play with the team. I’m so excited for the journey ahead."

Sargent-Wilson joined the Swans Academy last year and played in its inaugural Under-19 series, moving to Bond University on the Riewoldt AFL Excellence Scholarship earlier this year - a scholarship that has also produced Brisbane draftee Mikayla Pauga.

Gowans cites Sargent-Wilson's athleticism and running capacity, indicating that run and carry will be a priority for the inaugural Swans.

"I was looking for a player like Ruby who can get up the end of the field and help with offence, but also have the ability to sprint back and help with defence. We’ve found that player in Ruby," Gowans told the Swans.
