All the teams for Round 9 in the Smithy’s VFL.

CARLTON livewire Jesse Motlop will play his first game at any level for the season when he runs out for Carlton in its Smithy’s VFL clash with Gold Coast at IKON Park on Saturday.

Motlop has been sidelined with a hamstring injury since the pre-season and the Blues have decided he needs to get some miles in his legs before being considered for AFL selection in a game his team will be hungry to put their best foot forward in.

Carlton needed only to get within 12 goals of the Suns in Round 22 last year to protect its spot in the finals but kicked just two majors in a 127-point obliteration to fall out on percentage, with the Suns going on to complete an historic premiership victory.

Motlop will be joined in the Blues team by Sam and Corey Durdin, with the promoted Lachie Cowan and Bendigo Pioneers revelation Oliver Poole among the exclusions against a Suns team that has ominously recalled a host of stars.

Stalwart Sam Day, star ruckman Ned Moyle and midfielders Brayden Fiorini and Alex Davies return from AFL duty and Sean Lemmens is back from suspension, with Burleigh Suns Academy members Lachlan Gulbin and Beau Addinsall – the latter being the VFL’s first player to have been born in 2007 – selected to debut.

Port Melbourne will welcome back the cavalry just in time with five huge inclusions for its challenging trip to take on undefeated ladder leader Footscray at Mission Whitten Oval on Saturday.

AFL recruits Dan McKenzie, Sam Philp and Lachie Rankin will all return from injury, as will leading goalkicker Matt Signorello, while key defender Baker Smith has forced his way back in after three games for Greenvale and a guest appearance for Tasmanian club New Norfolk last week.

Jack Johnston will miss a week with an eye injury, while forwards Archi Manton and Kyle Viccars are among the omissions.

There are big names everywhere among the inclusions for the south-eastern derby between Casey Demons and Sandringham at Casey Fields on Sunday.

The Demons have named AFL omission and former Saint/Zebra Jack Billings to play his first VFL game for his new club, while tall forwards Ben Brown and Tom Fullarton, plus first-round draftee Koltyn Tholstrup are the other victims of Narrm’s shock loss to Waalitj Marawar in Perth last Sunday.

The Zebras, meanwhile, get Zak Jones, Tim Membrey, Mattaes Phillipou and Ben Paton back from St Kilda plus Dan Butler and Arie Schoenmaker from injury, while vice-captain Darby Hipwell forces his way back in, amazingly in place of captain Anthony Seaton.

Ned Maginness, the younger brother of Hawthorn’s Finn and son of dual Hawks premiership player Scott, will make his VFL debut.

Lachie Hunter will play for Narrm and Ned Moodie will miss at least two weeks with a knee injury for Casey, while Jack Hayes, Ryan Byrnes and Hugo Garcia have been named by the Saints in the AFL.

AFL-listed pair Kallan Dawson (omission) and Brayden George (shoulder) come back into North Melbourne’s team for its trip to take on former alignment partner Werribee on the Tigers’ Past Players Day on Sunday, with the Tigers including Jesse Clark after a bout of concussion.

The match is Tiger centre half-forward Nick Hayes’ 200th State league game as the most experienced player at this level in the VFL – he played 35 NEAFL games for the Brisbane Lions and made 113 SANFL appearances for Woodville-West Torrens, with this to be his 52nd game for Werribee.

Frankston has lost five players to injury for its difficult trip north to face Southport in a clash that offers a top six spot to the winner at Fankhauser Reserve.

Josh Smith will miss at least six weeks with facial injuries, Jack Newnes has been given a rest, Alec McComb and Taj Campbell-Farrell have ankle injuries and Kyle Stainthorpe will miss up to a month with a shoulder problem.

Jet Peckett, the son of former St Kilda star Justin Peckett, will make his debut for the Dolphins after strong form with Bonbeach.

Jay Lockhart is back for the Sharks to replace the unwell Matt McGuinness.

Injury-ruined Richmond has finally received some good news with Sam Banks and James Trezise returning from layoffs for the Tigers’ Dreamtime at the G curtain raiser against Essendon.

Tylar Young and Matt Coulthard also come down to boost a line-up that loses the luckless Sam Naismith with a devastating fourth ACL injury, Austin Johnson to concussion and Samson Ryan to the AFL.

Essendon regains Dylan Shiel from the AFL with Jordan Ridley and Nate Caddy heading in the other direction.

There will be three debutants, with Ry Cantwell and Harry Scott to play their first games for Richmond and Bendigo Pioneers captain Dayten Uerata given his chance to impress for the Bombers.

Geelong has had the luxury of including AFL regulars Brandan Parfitt and Mark O’Connor for its curtain-raiser clash with an injury-hit GWS at GMHBA Stadium on Saturday, with ruckman Kye Annand another inclusion and Jhye Clark heading up to the main game.

The Giants have been rocked by the loss of their best midfielder Josh Fahey with a Lisfranc injury that has likely ended his season, while Nic Quigg will miss six weeks with a hamstring injury.

James Peatling, Ryan Angwin and Toby McMullin have been promoted to the AFL, with Conor Stone and Jacob Wehr coming back the other way, while Swans Academy graduate and Manly-Warringah product Kale Gabila will play his first game.

Four AFL-listed players return to boost the Box Hill Hawks’ team for their Fenjiu Stadium clash against a Brisbane Lions team that is on the road for the second week in a row.

Henry Hustwaite and Ned Reeves are back from injury, while Finn Maginness and Jai Serong have been left out of the AFL team, with all to be significant inclusions for the home team alongside Mooroolbark debutant Jye Peacock, who breaks in after being an emergency last game.

The Lions regain Darcy Fort to take Reeves on and Shadeau Brain after his maiden AFL sojourn, with Jaxon Prior and Henry Smith also returning to bolster their line-up as they search for a spot in the top 10 without Brandon Ryan, who will play his first AFL game for his new club against the team who took him in last year’s mid-season draft.

All matches in the 2024 Smithy’s VFL and VFLW seasons will be live streamed free via the AFL website, AFL Live Official App and VFL App.

Smithy’s VFL broadcast partner, the Seven Network, will broadcast select matches live and free on the Seven Network in Victoria and on 7plus nationally. This week’s broadcast game will be Werribee vs North Melbourne.
